I like to incorporate issues I actually give a damn about, things which affect us all from political to the social aspects of life, my work often deals with my own life experiences. My latest project is based around the subject of 'Struggle', this piece is quite dark, a huge tree with branches stretched out forming hands which are grabbing for something while the roots are deeply buried and clasping into the soil. Van Gogh once used the image of a tree and its roots to express the feeling of a sort of battle in life, he described the roots as grimly and passionately rooted into the earth and yet half torn loose by its storms. My print includes obscure faces watching from a tree hiding like a dark secret mysteriously these faces represent certain things from my past creeping up on me tempting me. I am extremely interested in the human face, its quite amazing the diversity, how one certain look can distinguish the exact emotion of that person at that exact time. Facial expressions are a form of non-verbal communication, a language of its own, a sort of beautiful silence I believe somehow along the way my life had taken me to a place I didn't want to be I was slightly lost searching for something. I take inspiration from various artists who like myself like to dip into the darker side of life, I feel one must experience the dark in order to fully appreciate the light. I have created a huge lino cut, a lino that is too big for any press so in order to print this I must do it by hand with a burnishing tool.
