My work is based around the idea of preserving a memory. I have been heavily influenced by the book, Leaving Auschwitz, written by one of the few survivors of Auschwitz, Kitty Hart.On her return home from Auschwitz, Hart decided to have the tattooed concentration camp number removed from her arm and preserved in a jar of surgical alcohol. In the same instance, Hart removed the memory, maybe as an attempt to remove the proof of what she had been through, but also preserved it for longer than it could if it were to remain on her arm.Inspired by this act, I have created a series of paintings and tattooed 'skins' that show images of those affected by and involved in war. The skins have been preserved in Formaldehyde as a way of keeping these images and memories for longer than would usually be expected, as I feel that todays generation as with many before ours, should not forget those that have fought in or have been affected by war.
